High
Performance X Server for PCs running DOS
Exceed
for DOS lets you harness the power of UNIX, VMS, and
other operating systems from the convenience of your PC,
providing fast and efficient access to X-based hosts.
Without losing the
advantages of DOS, personal computer users can access and
display, on a single PC screen, multiple X applications
from UNIX hosts and other operating systems, across
TCP/IP networks, DEC net, and UnixWare IPX/SPX.
Exceed for DOS
provides the dual functionality of operating in either
real mode (for 286 PCs) or protected mode (for 386, 486,
and Pentium-based machines).
Functionality
- Real &
protected mode implementation
- MIT X11
Release 5 fully compliant
- Supports up
to 32 client connections simultaneously
- Control
Panel: This local client provides user
information, update resources usage (e.g.
available memory) and allows startup of other
local clients
- Backing store
and save unders to reduce network traffic
- Escape to DOS
feature lets users switch between DOS and the
server without having to restart. Users can
escape to the DOS shell or to any DOS process
- Xtrace:
Sophisticated protocol tracing captures all X
protocol packets to help with client debugging
- Choice of
Window Manager. You may run any host-based window
manager such as Motif or choose to run local hwm
(Hummingbird Window Manager).
- hwm a simple,
yet powerful local X window manager provides:
- Motif look
and feel, supports motif hints
- Runs on the
PC, which dramatically decreases network traffic
and speeds up all window management functions
- Conforms to
ICCCM specifications
- Virtual
Desktop provides users with a virtual screen much
larger than the actual display, presenting a
bird's-eye view of all active X applications
which the user can move on and off the screen.
This reduces desktop clutter and allows users,
who do not have the luxury of a 19" monitor
the ability to easily and quickly navigate
between multiple windows
- Click-to-focus
or point-to-focus
- User
definable menus and multi-level menus
- Icon manager
support for easy manipulation of icons
- hwm may be
stopped or started at any time
- Built-in xrdb
support so that a resource database can be
maintained locally
- Startup
methods: Telnet (htelnet, a local TELNET window),
REXEC, RSH, dterm, PCX$SERVER, XDMCP (indirect,
query, broadcast), and PASSIVE
- XDMCP
security
- Access
database - restricts server access to only
authorized hosts
- X11 R5 font
support - font server scalable fonts
- User friendly
interactive utility allows a graphic preview of
any of the X fonts supplied
- Full
interactive support for all the font naming and
alias schemes, including wild card font requests
- A font
compiler is provided which compiles .bdf and .pcf
format fonts into the server's font database
- Log all font
requests to a log file
- Fonts:
OpenLook, DEC, HP, IBM, 75dpi, 100dpi Andrew, PC,
Miscellaneous
- Unlimited
font size - not restricted to 64KB enabling the
use of oriental fonts, e.g. Kanji
- Display
adapter support: EGA, VGA, Super VGA, IBM 8514A,
XGA, XGA2, TIGA 2 & S3 chipset (see list)
- In 8514A,
XGA/XGA2, and S3 modes Exceed for DOS directly
accesses the graphics card registers which
substantially increases both speed and
performance
- Plane mask
support
- PseudoColor,
StaticColor, GrayScale, StaticGray, TrueColor
visuals
- 17
International keyboard mappings
- DEC
LK450/LK250 keyboard support
- 3 button
emulation on 2 button mouse
- Tuning
network performance: Users can tune the TCP/IP
adapter and network configuration to obtain
optimal performance
